This is a magnificent rocky massif with vertical walls, part of the
left slope of the Iskar Gorge. It is situated opposite Lakatnik Sta-
tion on the railway line between Sofia and Varna at an altitude of
about 600 m. Its relative altitude is 250 m. The lime here is cut
by many caves, entrances and galleries. The largest cave is the
Dark Hole, where there is an underground river. Its waters come
to the surface in the form of a swift-flowing carst spring, known
by the name of Jitolyub. The cave is characterized by an
interesting fauna. The Dark Hole is not adapted for mass visits,
although it is often visited by tourists.
The Rocks of Lakatnik are
an excellent place for alpinism.
There is an alpine shelter at
600 m and a camping at the foot of the rocks.
