SOFIA
The Bulgarian capital city is situated at the foothills of the Vitosha and Lyulin mountains, at an altitude of 550m. Sofia is the country's main administrative, political and cultural center. The ancient city was founded 7000 years ago in the place of a mineral spring. The capital boasts some 250 historic, architectural and cultural monuments.

WHAT TO SEE: The Roman Fortress Walls in the pedestrian underpass in downtown Sofia, the St. George Rotunda (4th c.) next to the Sheraton Hotel, St. Sofia Church (5th c.), the Alexander Nevsky Memorial Cathedral (built 1912) and its Crypt which houses over 500 9th-19th century icons, Boyana Church with its unique 11th-13th century murals, St. Petka of the Saddlers Church (14th c.), the National Museum of History, the National Archaeological Museum, the National Theater and the National Palace of Culture.
